HP Canada to offer printer trade-in program in new year

20 December, 2005
By Chris Talbot

Starting in January, HP Canada will be offering customers a chance to upgrade to a new HP printer and get a rebate based on trading in older printers from any manufacturer.
The rebates are being offered through a program that HP Canada has dubbed the "OUT with the OLD Trade-In Program. The program is aimed at small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) who want to update their printers to current printer technology. Through the program, which will run from Jan. 2, 2006 to April 30, 2006, SMBs will be able to get up to $1,200 in rebates for trading in their old printers for new HP printers.

According to David McGlashan, marketing program manager at HP Canada, the trade-in program was created to entice customers to upgrade to new HP printers. In some cases, customers are using printers that are more than a decade old, McGlashan said. Printer technology has advanced to the point that it would be cheaper from a total cost of ownership perspective to upgrade to newer, more efficient printers than to continue using older models, he added.

"It's really to encourage those customers to move up to our new competitive product line," McGlashan said.

HP announced a new portfolio of color printer products for the SMB market in October, and the company wants customers to consider upgrading to those products or others through the trade-in program, McGlashan said.

"What we've done is introduced a whole new family, and what that's been able to achieve for customers is faster speeds and more efficient use of toner, so there's cost savings. They're really all designed for affordable in-house printing of collateral," McGlashan said.

During the promotion, HP will buy back business printers from companies that wish to purchase a new HP printer in designated business printer categories. HP will not only buy back old printers, but the company will also arrange and pay for pick-up of the printers, as well as recycling costs, McGlashan said.

"With all of these new features and this whole brand new product line, we decided it was a good time for customers to trade up or move up to these new benefits with these new products," McGlashan said.

The promotion covers just about every type of printer HP manufactures, including Color LaserJet printers, multi-function printers, business inkjets, business all-in-ones, DesignJet printers and Monochrome LaserJet printers.
