Microsoft renames stripped-down Windows for Europe

The product Microsoft did not want to offer has a new name. Microsoft said on Monday that the version of Windows that European Union antitrust regulators have demanded that it sell in Europe will be called Windows XP Home Edition N or Windows XP Professional Edition N, the names that the commission wanted.
Microsoft had wanted language which made it fairly explicit that the company considers the EU-directed OS to be an inferior option for which there is no burning public demand. It had requested the name Windows XP Reduced Media Edition be used.

The agreement follows the EU's own ruling that Microsoft had used monopolistic practices, and its directive to the software giant to sell a version of Windows without its Windows Media Player software.
