Corel has launched the latest version of WordPerfect Office,
one of the competitors to Microsoft Office. WordPerfect
Office X4 breaks new ground as the world's first PDF office
suite, allowing users to import, edit and export PDF documents
including scanned PDFs without needing third-party PDF
software.
Office X4 lets users convert electronically-generated or
scanned PDF files to fully editable text using OCR (Optical
Character Recognition) technology, add password protection
to PDF files, auto-preview PDF documents, and create PDFs
for archival using ISO standard PDF/A file format, as well
as tagged PDF support for handheld and screen-reading devices.
"With WordPerfect Office X4, we wanted to deliver
an office suite that enables users to more effectively communicate
their ideas and achieve their best results," said Jason
Larock, Director of Product Management for WordPerfect Office.
"We believe that our latest release provides users
with an office suite that responds to their real-world needs
and gives them the power to do more with words, numbers,
and ideas."
In addition to the word processing, spreadsheet, slide
show and email applications offered in previous versions
of the suite, Office X4 also offers new Corel Connector
online services, WordPerfect Lightning for digital note-taking,
and Corel Visual Intelligence SE for data visualization
and business intelligence.
WordPerfect Office X4 now provides suite-wide compatibility
with Microsoft Office 2007 files (OOXML) and Open Document
Format (ODF). More than 60 file formats are supported, including
Microsoft Word files back to Version 1.0.
WordPerfect Office X4 also introduces new Web collaboration
and storage services, a new document redaction tool, a Web-connected
digital notebook and an innovative new business intelligence
package.
The software comes with 200MB of free online storage and
backup, and other online features including calendaring,
lists, bookmarks, contacts, and the ability to build shared
workspaces online, along with an integrated, shareable email
application.
Other new features include:
An integrated redaction tool for redacting legal or other
documents and outputting them as WordPerfect, Microsoft
Word or PDF files
Optimization for Windows Vista or Windows XP
The ability to automatically convert live data from the
Web, Quattro Pro or Excel into visuals
The ability to perform "what-if" analyses and
tailor data analysis with a single click
Updated content including 8,000 clipart images, 175 photos
and 900 TrueType fonts
Free training and documentation, including two-hour Lynda.com
training video
Office X4 Professional Edition for enterprise customers
adds read/write support for larger spreadsheets and data
sets, database connectivity with Paradox, the WordPerfect
Office SDK and other enterprise-class tools.
"In a world often defined by conflicting standards
where the user often feels neglected, Corel's refreshing
approach stands apart by focusing on responding to customer
needs and helping them get quality work done faster,"
said Rob Enderle, Principal Analyst for the Enderle Group.
"With WordPerfect Office X4, Corel has created the
most interoperable office suite in the market. This version
has unique innovative capabilities that entice customers
to use the new offering."
