PCs in use worldwide will top 1 billion by
2007
13 March, 2005
The worldwide number of PCs in-use surpassed 820 million in
2004 and is projected to top 1 billion in 2007. PCs in-use growth
is slowing as the industrialized world is approaching the top
of the S-curve. Strong PC growth will continue in the developing
countries for another decade. The U.S. has a large lead with
over 220 million PCs in-use -- over 3X the number in Japan.
The U.S. accounts for over 27% of all PCs in-use compared to
4.6% of worldwide population. PC usage is growing rapidly in
China, which is expected to surpass Japan in 2007. PC usage
is also growing strongly in many populous countries such as
Brazil, India and Russia. Canada ranks 9th worldwide, with 22.39
million PCs in use, accounting for 2.72% of the globe's total.
"Notebook PCs are growing rapidly and now account for 24%
of total PCs in-use and nearly 27% in the U.S.," says Dr.
Egil Juliussen, the author of the report. PCs per capita in
the U.S. have surpassed 76% and will remain higher than cell
phones for a few more years. |
